Streamlined NSFAS Supporting Documents Requirements: New Submission Guidelines for 2024

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme has implemented new changes to its NSFAS supporting documents requirements. Starting in 2024, the scheme will no longer accept affidavits as proof of information. This change aims to improve the accuracy of applications and curb fraudulent submissions, ensuring that only those who meet the financial aid criteria receive assistance.

Affidavits were previously used by applicants to declare various household and financial conditions, but they often lacked the verification necessary to ensure the accuracy of the information provided. As a result, NSFAS found that many applicants were using affidavits to provide unverified or incorrect details, leading to discrepancies in the system.

What Documents Are Now Required?

When applying for NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) funding, you need to provide specific supporting documents to complete your application. Here's a list of commonly required documents:

1. Certified Copy of ID Document

  • If you are under the age of 16, a certified copy of your unabridged birth certificate is required.

2. Proof of Income

  • This is needed for both you and your parents/guardians or spouse (if applicable).
  • Payslips, pension receipts, or affidavits if there is no formal income.

3. Disability Form (if applicable)

  • If you have a disability, you must complete and submit the NSFAS Disability Annexure A form.

4. Consent Form

  • A consent form signed by your parents/guardians or spouse (if married), authorizing NSFAS to verify their income.

5. Academic Records

  • If you are applying for NSFAS for the first time, you must submit a certified copy of your most recent academic transcript or report.
  • If you are a continuing student, your previous year’s academic results are required.

6. Proof of Residence

  • This could be a utility bill or a formal letter confirming your residential address.

7. Declaration Form for Unemployed Parents/Guardians (if applicable)

  • If your parents/guardians are unemployed, you may need to submit an affidavit to declare this.

8. SASSA Grant Beneficiaries (if applicable)

  • If you or your family receive a SASSA grant, you must provide proof of this.

Additional Tips:

  • Ensure all documents are certified (within the last 3 months) and are clear copies.
  • Make sure your documents are submitted within the required application period to avoid delays.
